The Power of Awe... and Where to Find It ft. Tony Hale | The Happiness Lab | Dr. Laurie Santos
Awe reduces stress, helps us forget our minor worries and makes us feel more connected to the people around us. We all need more awe in our lives - but surely it's not that easy to find awesome experiences on your average Tuesday?
Actor Tony Hale explains how everyday awe helps ease his anxieties, while UC Berkeley's Dacher Keltner shows us how to find awe in music, art, scenery... even in a walk around our block. And Dr Laurie explores the things that give her a sense of awe with the help of Mike Menzel - who built a space telescope that lets us see billions of years into the past.

Dr Laurie Santos. Achieving Happiness Goals: Rethink Psychological Timeline. Science Wellbeing Teens
I am 50 years old and preparing to take a job that pays 27% less than the university multimedia job I have had for 25 years. I started out with so much enthusiasm for my work and my personal life that I was excelling at both. I brought in more money for my department than all my coworkers combined, and it was completely unintentional. For 15 years and two bosses I thrived in both career and community. Two bosses had loved my work and let me thrive. And then a coworker was promoted to manager, and I went through a very confusing journey of discovering that my work success angered him, as he did everything he could to dismantle the past 15 years of my career. I thought I could recover it once he was no longer new at managing, and that these were just growing pains, but no. I kept getting smaller and smaller and doing less work and getting fewer opportunities. I felt so energized by hard work and now I feel drained by doing almost nothing. My coworkers that I was outworking before are now also doing less than before. My morale became so low that started spending almost all my free time trying to self-medicate and isolate from my friends and community. The coworker turned manager had isolated me from my work community over time, too. At 50 I realized life is not about what I spend my time doing, but who I spend my time with and how I feel. So I'm hoping to still be able to pay my bills and move over a shop manager job at the art school. Telecom people are not my community, artists and thinkers are, and I can't feel healthy being around boring and negative people with huge egos that hold everyone else back. I will find a new way and it will be following happiness.
Nobody wants to be friends with somebody who has no friends. Once it starts it's hard to get out of.
gotta find my awe, and did not know that thing could be that much powerful
As a fellow Tony, I am a huge fan of Tony Hale and super happy to see him on here again!
This episode is an amazing revelation for me! I AM an introvert. But I also am amazed at how people all really do band together when something remarkable happens, like a natural disaster, or even a really bad car crash. People stop to help. People check on each other. I love that. I don't like my current boss. They are mean and seem to be upset with me for my BEST qualities, like it makes them jealous. It increasingly makes me uncomfortable, and I make myself smaller to keep him from attacking me. I no longer want to do that. I want to be my big bright shining self and create all the value in the world that I want. If he has a problem with that, then its up to him to change or find the people that make him feel great. I'm looking for better people now anyway. And I will accept that he is a less mature person than I am, and treat him like a child that needs encouragement to grow happier.
Top notch content. Thanks a lot!
thank you. I wish I had seen this video a few months before.
Isn't that "biological resistance" literally just depression..? 🥴
Thank you for this video (and other previous ones), your work is relevant, sensational. I don't know how to speak English, I use the Google translator and it's always a great joy to hear from your interviewees and to know about your project at Yale. Abraço do Brasil.
Attention span issues max
for some reason, i don't get notifications when you upload videos, although i got all clicked on
Thank you very much. I would like to friendly suggest to speak a little bit slower so that we can fully understand everything. Sometimes you provide many importants informations/studies in a short period of time :)
My memory had gotten worse the more time I spend in my phone.
As someone who grew up poor in a literal desert, I don't know what is boredom. There is always something.
I wouldn’t say being bored but rather being aware of your surroundings and in the present and letting your mind wander or do something other than look at your phone
Thank you
I'm grateful for my family and being alive and breathing and having an able body
I'm so greatful tbh. As a psychology aspirant, I've been doing the 'Introduction to psychology' course by the Yale University through Coursera. Now this podcast too.. 😊
I relate to these ideas alot. I struggle alot with pushing forward all the time and never finding happiness. I'm ahead of many people in my age group and it's very difficult to get the negative thoughts out of my head. I can't just sit around and relax. I look forward to learning more and hopefully I can find peace in my never ending struggle!
It *is* hard, I was playing tetris while I watched this lol
Hi Dr I MY WAY TOO BE HAPPINESS IS TO STOP ALL MY THOUGHTS BECAUSE ALL MY SADNESS COME FROM MY THOUGHTS SO I LIVE WHEN IAM NOT DOING THING IN NOT THINKING AND I FEEL RELAXE
Thank you.
Love it❤❤❤❤❤❤
watch out for people at work who can gain from tricking you out on something/anything
i love u dr santos
Thanks Laurie
I listen to all of the Happiness Lab videos. Im trying to forgive my mother. Not for our relationship. That’s done. I just want to forgive her so I have peace with it. She’s old in her 80’s & along with my dad I haven’t spoken to them in 7 years. I’m worried when they die I will have regrets. But I’m so angry even after 7 years that I don’t know how to forgive them. Can you please do a lab about that. Sincerely 😊
he is on his death bed, there is no next week. Asking yourself deathbed questions: What do I regret? ex. Like more time with family...maybe More free time...nope More naps? no More whatever...? Less whatever...? But why does it care on your deathbed?
madam you should exercise too hahah to be smart healthwise
Hi there, I saw your UA-cam [ Dr. Laurie Santos ] channel video, You have uploaded many beautiful videos. But your video doesn't get views and subscriptions, This is because your title, keyword, tag, and thumbnail are not properly SEO, so your video is not getting views and subscribers. if you fix them you will get better results. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks and Regards, Mahmud
Why are young people in the West increasingly unhappy? | DW News
How is this episode not listened more? Now it's our time to make the best of it, i saved it in my playlist a weeks ago and I've revisited few times per week, it helped me appreciating people around me 😅
I can think of a smell and be able to smell it i thought everyone could
I'm polite and talkative to people everyday when I go out and people don't seem like they don't want to be bothered. I still continue to be kind, polite and social 🤗🤗
And the legend starts here
Sooo lit
Sure but those studies are done on people that had rarely or never done kindness (or whatever the positive psychology experiments offers them), so initially could possible have some results. People have a very small joy from lets say cigarettes. It is consistent and its measurable. So, people smoke them. They do not read books "you should smoke" and so on. IF any of the positive psychology claims were true, they will to be very addictive and they will feel natural. So since we do not observe that, rather we observe the opposite, we can conclude that the effect is very limited, in some special circumstances. Besides, (most)people will listen to this, try it a few times, realize that they are being lied to (or that just doesn't work) and will lean to not listen to this kind of logic.
Thank you Dr. Santos. I got to know you through Jon Favreau's podcast Offline. Thanks for your thoughts and insights.
Where has hedonic adaptation been for the three decades of anxiety and depression
I think my problem is that I never really had anything that I thought was wrong and I was always in this bubble of arrogance…
i took a trip to europe solo as a introvert! I quickly found out that just approaching someone, smiling and saying hello got a BUNCH easier after repetition, and i had a small trick to calm my nervousness at first. i would always carry along a little tin of breathmints, and if i wanted to start a conversation i could always offer one as a conversation starter.
thanks hi saam dr laurie santos thanks its in ramazan here in muslim fasting

Just discovered you. I am an 76 year old yoga teacher and love your work and want to incorporate it. Tiny irritant is the amount of times you use the word "like". I remember how that came in in about 1994. before that people said "Um". Anyway I will continue to explore your work which I found through the Waking Up app.
When did Laurie take the plunge and got hitched 😮❤
